Stuff I Have Seen

Today I joined one of the local peaceful protests in an effort to listen and follow God's call to seek justice and defend the cause of black brothers and sisters who are hurting. As a Christ follower I believe that I have the responsibility to seek justice and plead the cause of the oppressed. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.⁣" - Isaiah 1:17 ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The Old Testament sets forth a paradigm for prophetic action defending the weakest in society. The early church was known for taking up the cause of the "least of these." More importantly, Christ himself demonstrated the non-violent path of love and justice. I don't know if my actions as an individual will make a ripple. But that doesn't matter; I'm called to be faithful. I am called to listen and follow. Ultimately the results are up to God. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I don't believe that everyone is called to protest. Perhaps as parents we can teach our kids from an early age that all human beings are made in the image of a God and are worthy of dignity. Perhaps you can write to your politicians to express your convictions. Take the path of non-violent resistance. There is no room for violence among Christians. Being pro-life means we will defend the right to flourish, from "womb to tomb." The ability to make ends meet is part of God's vision for flourishing. Don't destroy businesses. A civil and just government is part of God's intention for humans. As John Calvin once said, "a just and well regulated government will be distinguished for maintaining the rights of the poor and afflicted." Government officials and police officers who want to see our city flourish need our encouragement. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Christians, let's listen to Jesus, let us not "neglect justice and the love of God," (Luke 11:42). Let us seek to love with words AND deeds.
